Big faces, three words or fewer, and one clear contrast. What the thumbnails that beat their channel average have in common.
A thumbnail has one job: to make someone stop scrolling for long enough to read your title. Across thousands of outlier videos, the same few patterns come back again and again.
The rules
- One face, big, showing one emotion — surprise, worry, delight.
- Three words or fewer. The title does the explaining.
- One strong contrast: a bright subject on a dark background, or the reverse.
- Readable at the size of a stamp. Check it on your phone before you publish.
- Show the result or the stakes, not the process.
- Leave the bottom-right corner empty — that is where the video length sits.
- Make it look different from the three thumbnails next to it in the feed.
Test more than one
The best creators rarely guess right the first time. Make three or four versions with different words and expressions, and test them. Small changes to the face or the word often move click-through more than a whole new design.
