How it works

Three steps, a few seconds.

  1. 01Type the titleOr paste a few to compare. Add a thumbnail if you have one.
  2. 02See every placementHome feed, search, the sidebar and mobile, at their real widths.
  3. 03Fix what gets cutMove the words that matter into the part everyone sees.

How long can a YouTube title be?

YouTube allows up to 100 characters. That doesn’t mean people see 100: most placements show two lines and cut the rest with “…”. Where the cut falls depends on the screen and the letters you use — W takes far more room than i.

That’s why this tool draws the title at each placement’s real width instead of counting characters.

Put the hook in the first 40 characters

The sidebar and some phone layouts show the least. If the subject and the reason to click are in the first 40 or so characters, the title still works when the end is cut.

Title and thumbnail work as a pair

The thumbnail is seen first, the title second. They shouldn’t repeat each other: let the image show the moment and the title add what the image can’t say.

FAQ

Good to know.

What’s the YouTube title character limit?

100 characters, including spaces and emoji.

How many characters show before it’s cut off?

It depends on the placement and the letters. Roughly 50–70 on the home feed and on phones, fewer in the sidebar — the preview shows the exact cut for your title.

Are the previews exact?

They use YouTube’s font sizes and widths, so they’re close. YouTube changes its layout now and then, and screen sizes vary, so treat the cut-off point as a guide.

Does my thumbnail get uploaded?

No. It stays in your browser; nothing is sent to us.
